An international billion dollar corporation, ITT industries has supplied sophisticated military defense systems as well as advanced technical and operational services to government customers for over 50 years. Imaging specialists at the ITT Space Systems Division have helped produce focal plane solutions and signal processing electronics for highly sophisticated imaging payloads onboard the world’s leading commercial and military remote sensing platforms.
Challenge
ITT identified a need to obtain direct, non-point source measurements of specific gases from an airborne platform, regardless of the time of day or season. They sought to accurately locate and quantify area gas emissions while maintaining an exceedingly high degree of control over the specific parameters surrounding target illumination by using an “active” sensor system. ITT needed this active system to integrate flawlessly with a high quality medium format digital aerial camera system, a precision position and orientation system (POS), preflight planning tools, and post flight data processing software.

“In our era, it has become an urgent necessity to look after our infrastructure investments for environmental reasons and beyond; and yet the cost to do so must not escape attention. Our ideal solution provides safety and protection with economic sensibility.”
Dan Brake, Director, Airborne Natural Gas Emission LIDAR (ANGEL) Service Division, ITT Industries.

ITT quickly understood that the features found within the Applanix DSS system could immediately provide the ANGEL system with three key advantages: precise and accurate inertial and position measurement, high-quality directly georeferenced digital aerial imagery, and pre/post mission data processing. The Applanix solution was entirely interoperable with the LIDAR solutions available and the digital format provided seamless data sharing and rapid turn-around times, from airborne platform to database.
By introducing Applanix technology as part of the ANGEL system, ITT now holds a superior rapid response solution for monitoring extensive gas facilities and industrial infrastructure. Directly georeferenced LIDAR and aerial imagery data supported by the Applanix POS system remove the need for ground control points while accelerating workflow without placing people on the ground, in remote areas, or near potential hazards. LIDAR and image data can be collected over vast areas quickly, accurately, affordably, and repeatedly, while discoveries may be detected and information shared quickly with action teams. Potentially catastrophic situations otherwise difficult to perceive visually can now be identified and addressed automatically, and in dramatically less time than ever before.
