Challenge

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) required a series of color infrared digital images of the wetland areas surrounding the state's major highways for environmental impact monitoring. GeoEye was tasked with carrying out the initial feature delineation for ODOT. The project involved 1500 linear miles (2400 kms) of highway to be flown at an altitude which would generate a 500ft swath and capture the adjoining wetland areas. Detailed analysis of the imagery would be undertaken by remote sensing specialists to determine the impact potential highway projects might have on the various wetland ecosystems.

Solution

"Based on our past experience with the DSS, we knew the system was the right solution for this project. Its attributes matched the job requirements perfectly," Jim Muckenhoupt, explained. "The system's exceptional radiometry plus the specified two foot GSD (Ground Sample Distance) gave us that image-definition advantage that simplified the data interpretation process."

Result

These key attributes enabled GeoEye to quickly and efficiently analyze the images and extract the information they required. In addition, the DSS system's medium-format footprint, direct georeferencing capability, and semi-automatic processing allowed for a complete digital workflow, which enabled GeoEye's further orthomosaic requirements to be completed well ahead of schedule.
