August 13, 2008 Applanix Digital Sensor System (DSS) captures Sunshine Propane Depot following explosion
Richmond Hill based Applanix Corporation, owned by Trimble Navigation LTD, manufactures an airborne mapping system called the DSS RapidOrtho System.
The DSS collects high resolution colour imagery from the air and rapidly assigns a geographic coordinate to each pixel without needing to be on the ground in the area. The images are then used to help manage, analyze, and assess damage due to any type of disaster. As part of the manufacturing process, Applanix routinely flies systems over a test field north of Toronto. One such test flight occurred on the Tuesday following the Sunshine Propane Depot explosion of August 10, 2008 in Toronto. Applanix briefly flew over the disaster area and was able to take high quality aerial images of the facility. The full resolution DSS RapidOrtho imaging products of the disaster zone are being made available to anyone who requires highly accurate ortho imagery for analysis purposes. Images available at: View in Google Earth.
