Applanix Celebrates 15 Years
RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO – Applanix Corporation is celebrating 15 years of providing customer solutions as the industry leader in the development, manufacture, sales, and support of Integrated Inertial/GPS products. Founded in 1991, the company's Position and Orientation Systems (POS™) are an industry-standard for airborne, land, and marine survey applications.

Launching Applanix was the concept of three engineers: Erik Lithopoulos, Blake Reid, and Bruno Scherzinger. Their goal was to provide real-world solutions to applications that needed precise position and orientation measurement. With a POS prototype and demand for the new technology, Applanix was born.
Applanix has grown to become a company with approximately 100 employees and now has offices throughout North America and in Europe. The POS system has been incorporated into marine vessels for nautical surveys, land vehicles for roadway assessment, and airborne vehicles for direct georeferencing of aerial surveys using the Applanix Digital Sensor System. Most recently, Applanix POS technology played a critical role in guiding two of the top three finishers at the DARPA Grand Challenge, a 132 mile robotic vehicle race across the dessert terrain near Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.
Applanix became a Trimble company in 2003 and operates as a wholly owned subsidiary.
