Applanix Incorporates Micromachined Sensor Technology with its Line of Position and Orientation System Products

RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO – Applanix announced today that the latest development in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology has been incorporated into its line of Position and Orientation System products. The state-of-the-art, low-noise, micromachined quartz components are compact, durable and designed for use in a high-vibration environment. The custom designed sensors are at the forefront of MEMS technology, and manufactured by BEI Systron Donner Inertial Division (SDID), located in Concord, Calif., U.S., a division of BEI Technologies, Inc.

Joe Hutton, Director of Airborne Products at Applanix commented, "This type of sensor is the future of inertial technology and as a leader in providing inertial geospatial solutions we are very aware of current developments in this field. Today’s announcement is the result of a two-year collaboration with SDID to take their technology into the complex demands of Applanix products, and to ensure Applanix remains well positioned for the future."

SDID’s innovative solid-state sensors are micromachined using photolithographic processes producing components that are comparable to small ring laser and fiber optic gyros. Applanix chose the SDID system over competing technologies because of the high-precision requirements of their POS products and SDID’s expertise in micromachined technology manufacture.

The Applanix line of POS products with MEMS technology is expected to begin shipping in May 2005.
