October 17, 2005 Another Successful Applanix User Group Meeting... The 2005 Applanix User Group Meeting brought together professionals from around the globe to discuss individual operations in the air, on land, and over the waves using Applanix technology. This year’s seminars were punctuated with well publicized application examples, including: Recovery operations following the Indian Ocean tsunami disaster, robotic vehicles of the DARPA Grand Challenge, change detection and trip route visualization tools for military/security planning, and assessing hurricane Katrina’s fury upon the Gulf of Mexico coastline. Over three engaging and eventful days, new concepts were presented alongside application examples, future digital sensor designs, and GPS/IMU improvements for aircraft, land vehicles, and marine vessels.
Following registration and breakfast on Day 1, guests were formally welcomed by Applanix President Steve Woolven, who proceeded to introduce a group of keynote speakers from the Canadian Department of National Defense. Led by Major Kyle Little, this team specializes in rapid mapping for military organizations and has been actively on the ground in operations from Haiti to Afghanistan. Major Little explained the severity of the data gap that exists for many military undertakings in remote areas, especially in urban operations. He then outlined how the Canadian Forces’ “Deployed Geomatics Support Team” designed, tested, and evaluated approaches using the Applanix DSS solution for rapidly producing ground visualizations, high-repetition change detections, and target area analyses. Even when faced with difficult terrain, vast regions, and high volumes of data, the small team has the process down to an art and can produce results in minutes. From that point on, Day 1 was a dynamic sharing of views and experiences between all disciplines. Guest speakers joined senior Applanix directors in presenting research and recent developments for Air, Land, and Marine solutions. All presenters introduced fascinating and detailed accounts of truly groundbreaking work. They also shared personal visions of what technological developments will soon follow in their specific fields. Day 1 concluded in the evening with a lavish dinner reception in the exclusive Renaissance lounge overlooking the Rogers Centre field, famous for its retractable domed roof and home to the Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club and the Toronto Argonauts Football Club. Day 2 allowed guests to focus on individual specialties. Sessions were divided into Air, Land, and Marine seminars aimed at detailing key Applanix product advantages, individual operational aspects, and advanced data processing methods under each category. The evening activities scheduled for Day 2 began with a dinner hosted at Wayne Gretzky’s followed by live comedy entertainment at the world renowned Second City Theatre, where such talents as Mike Myers, Martin Short, Gilda Radner, and John Candy began their careers. Day 3 was a “Show and Tell” day. Following a corporate overview and an informal conference wrap-up, guests were invited back to tour the Applanix headquarters facilities. While with us, they could speak one-on-one with our leading developers, ask questions relating to specific hardware designs, witness the sophistication and pride of workmanship within each Applanix product shipped, and even receive customer support training specific to their individual needs. Planning for next year’s Applanix User Group Meeting has begun. We hope you can join us in 2006 because it already promises to be a fantastic showcase of leading edge technologies and pioneering applications. We look forward to seeing all of our customers and technology partners again next year in Toronto!
