June 23, 2004 Applanix Releases its Next Generation POS LV System
RICHMOND HILL, CANADA - Applanix announced today the release of its next generation POS LV (Position and Orientation System for Land Vehicles). Based on Applanix' proven tightly-coupled, integrated inertial technology, the next generation POS LV is designed to provide uninterrupted positioning and orientation information in areas where GPS reception is compromised or unavailable. The system is engineered for a wide variety of land vehicle applications, such as road profiling, pavement analysis, and asset management.
Dave Morrison, Director of Land Products at Applanix commented, "With the introduction of our next generation POS LV, we have incorporated several new software functions to improve real-time performance, and streamline the operational capability of our customers. The system has also been redesigned as a compact, rugged and light-weight unit. Not only are there improvements in performance and functionality, but with the reduced size, weight, and lower power consumption, new markets such as machine control and vehicle robotics are now proving a viable enterprise for the new system." The next generation POS LV incorporates the latest in Trimble survey grade GPS receivers. Provisions for new sensor input and output have also been included, such as an auxiliary GPS, additional distance measurement instrumentation, and COM ports together with an analogue I/O capability. ABOUT POS LV POS LV is a tightly-coupled, integrated inertial positioning and orientation system. It is used to generate accurate, uninterrupted positioning information for mobile mapping, road geometry, pavement inspection, GIS database and asset management applications. The POS LV system's inertial technology provides continuous positioning data in areas with problematic GPS reception, such as in a downtown city core or along tree lined streets. In addition to the more traditional applications, POS LV position and orientation information is now being used in robotic navigation systems, as seen in the company's recent collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University in the DARPA Grand Challenge, where the POS LV was successfully integrated as part of the onboard navigation system. About Applanix Corporation Applanix, a Trimble Company (NASDAQ: TRMB), develops, manufactures, sells and supports products and solutions for Mobile Mapping and Positioning. Applanix’ Position and Orientation Systems ( POS) are used in a variety of applications, including road profiling, GIS data acquisition, aerial surveying and mapping, railroad track maintenance and seafloor mapping.
