March 5, 2004 Applanix Aided-Inertial Technology helps Carnegie Mellon navigate the DARPA Grand Challenge
RICHMOND HILL, CANADA – Applanix aided-inertial technology has been chosen as a key component for Carnegie Mellon University’s entry, The Red Team, competing in the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Grand Challenge for autonomous unmanned vehicles. The Red Team will be using the Applanix Position and Orientation System for Land Vehicles (POS LV) on their super-modified Humvee to help traverse 250 miles of off-road terrain from Barstow, California to Las Vegas, Nevada on March 13, 2004. The course must be completed in 10hrs, without human intervention. With a one million dollar prize at stake, competition is fierce, and teams are pinning their hopes of success on a combination of innovative engineering and the latest in navigation and motion sensor technology. |
