Applanix recognized as innovation role model by the Canadian government's National Research Council

Markham, ON - November 13, 2002 -A Canadian company at the forefront of aided inertial technology has overcome one of the serious limitations of the satellite-based Global Positioning System. The company is being promoted today as a national role model for innovation in Canada. Pinpointing your location has never been easier or more accurate thanks to an Ontario firm that has made this capability even more flexible and reliable.

Industry Minister Allan Rock announced today that Applanix Corporation of Richmond Hill, has been identified as one of Canada's Innovation Leaders to be celebrated this year under the National Research Council of Canada's (NRC) Vision 2006 and in the context of Canada's Innovation Strategy.

"We are delighted by the entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation that Applanix Corporation has demonstrated," said Minister Rock. "Encouraging hundreds of companies like Applanix will help Canada become one of the most innovative countries in the world."

"Seventy percent of the Canadian economy is comprised of small and medium sized businesses, so the contribution companies such as Applanix make is invaluable," said Bryon Wilfert, Member of Parliament, Oak Ridges, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance. "This certificate recognizes their commitment to innovation and leading edge technology."

The company's approach overcomes one of the most serious limitations with GPS, the fact that the satellites required for a fix are not always in view. At the core of each Applanix product is a self-contained inertial sensor. Not only does this sensor output very precise positioning data, but also seamlessly continues tracking the user's position in the absence of GPS information. The resulting readings are then updated with conventional GPS data later, once the satellites are again available.

"Today, Applanix is in an enviable position" said Blake Reid, President of Applanix. "Although GPS has been a tremendously important development in the world of positioning, cutting-edge technologies such as vehicle navigation systems and homeland security initiatives are demanding more accurate and more reliable positioning. The successful application of aided inertial technology in the military world has already proven it to be the preferred answer. As the leading provider of this technology to commercial markets, Applanix is ideally positioned to meet these demands."

The National Research Council's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) has played a critical role by supporting the research and development that went into POStm. This wide-ranging support took the idea from the testing bench and enabled it to become a turnkey solution that has significantly enhanced the quality of survey and mapping work.

A key component of Canada's system of innovation, the National Research Council Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP) is a federal catalyst that links a diverse network of institutions, organizations and programs to help Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) develop and exploit technology in a competitive, knowledge-based economy.

"We are proud to celebrate this success and encourage Canadian innovation," said Dr. Arthur Carty, President of NRC.

Recognized globally for research and innovation, Canada's National Research Council (NRC) is a leader in the development of an innovative, knowledge-based economy for Canada through science and technology. NRC operates world-class research facilities as well as information, technology and innovation support networks from coast to coast.

These announcements build on Canada's Innovation Strategy released by Minister Rock and the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development, on February 12, 2002. Details on the strategy can be found at www.innovationstrategy.gc.ca.
